Terms of service
The deal, in plain words.
No wall of capital letters. Here's what we do, what we don't, and what's on you.
The short version
We turn your bills into CO₂ numbers you can send to a customer. We work hard to get them right, but they're estimates built from the documents you give us — you're the one who signs them off before they go anywhere. The service is free right now and comes with no guarantees of uptime. Either of us can walk away at any time.
Who we are
CarbonProxy is operated by Iyman Ahmed. You can reach us at contact@iyman-ahmed.tech about anything on this page.
These terms apply to everyone who uses carbonproxy.net. By creating an account you're agreeing to them.
What you need to use it
You must be 18 or over and using CarbonProxy for a business — this isn't a consumer product.
One account per organisation. Keep your password to yourself; anything done from your account is treated as done by you. Tell us straight away if you think someone else has got in.
You need the right to upload the documents you upload. Don't upload anyone else's bills without their say-so.
What we promise
We calculate your emissions with published, official emission factors (currently UK DEFRA and Ember via Our World in Data), and we show you the workings behind every figure so you can check them.
The maths is done by ordinary code, not by an AI guessing. AI is used only to read numbers off your documents. That's a deliberate design choice so your figures are reproducible and defensible.
We keep your data in the EU, we don't sell it, and we never use your documents to train AI models. The details are in our Privacy page.
What we don't promise
CarbonProxy gives you an estimate, not an audit. We are not auditors, accountants, or legal advisers, and nothing here is professional advice.
We can't guarantee the numbers are correct. They depend entirely on the documents you upload — if a bill is unclear, incomplete, or the reading is wrong, the result will be wrong too. That's why we show our working: check it before you send it.
You are responsible for anything you submit to your customers, to regulators, or to anyone else. Review the figures first. If the stakes are high, have a qualified professional review them too.
The service is provided "as is". We don't promise it will be available at any particular time, or that it will never lose data. It's free, it's early, and it's run by one person.
Where our liability stops
To the fullest extent the law allows, we're not liable for indirect or consequential losses — lost profit, lost contracts, lost business, reputational harm, or penalties imposed on you by anyone else.
Where liability can't legally be excluded, it's capped at whatever you've paid us in the previous twelve months. While the service is free, that is zero.
Nothing here limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that can't lawfully be limited. If you're a consumer in the EU or UK, your statutory rights are unaffected.
Fair use
Free accounts can upload a limited number of documents. We'll tell you the limit in your workspace, and we may change it.
Don't try to break the service, get into other people's accounts, scrape it, resell it, or run it through automated tools without asking us first. Don't use it for anything illegal.
Creating lots of accounts to get round the free limit isn't on. We block throwaway addresses and cap signups, and we may close accounts that are clearly working around the limits.
Money
CarbonProxy is free while we're getting started. There is nothing to pay and no card required.
We'll introduce paid plans later. If we do, we'll tell you before anything you use starts costing money — we won't quietly start charging for something you already had.
Your content stays yours
You keep ownership of everything you upload and of the numbers we produce for you. You can download or delete the lot at any time from your workspace.
You give us permission to process your documents purely to provide the service. That permission ends when you delete them.
We own the software itself, the site, and the way we present things. Using CarbonProxy doesn't transfer any of that to you.
Ending it
You can delete your account whenever you like, from your workspace. Everything goes with it, immediately and permanently.
We can suspend or close an account that breaks these terms, or that puts the service or other users at risk. Where it's reasonable to do so, we'll tell you why first.
We may stop offering the service altogether. If that happens we'll give you reasonable notice and a chance to download your data.
Changes to these terms
We may update this page. If a change materially affects you, we'll email the address on your account before it takes effect. Carrying on using CarbonProxy after that means you accept the new version.
Law
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts there have jurisdiction. If you're a business in the EU, this doesn't remove any mandatory local protections that apply to you.
